Swenson, 89, Crosby, ND and formerly of Noonan, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013 at the St. Luke's Sunrise Care Center in Crosby. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 25, 2013 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bowbells. Burial followed at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Noonan. Junietta was born June 18, 1924, the daughter of G.J. and Lilla M. (Radtke) Brown and raised on the family farm three miles south of Noonan. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 25, 2013 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bowbells. Burial followed at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Noonan. Junietta was born June 18, 1924, the daughter of G.J. and Lilla M. (Radtke) Brown and raised on the family farm three miles south of Noonan. At six months old she suffered pneumonia, at which time a slight heart defect was detected. June attended Noonan Public school from grade one through 12, graduating as Salutatorian in 1942. When taking the Minot Teachers' College entrance exams, June tested highest in Comprehension and received a Statdard Teaching Certificate in 1943. From 1943 to 1945 she held a teaching position at Kenmare and then Flaxton. June married Robert W. Swenson Oct. 7, 1945 and became the mother of five children, raising them on the family farm seven miles north of Bowbells. In 1961, June returned to teaching at a country school for three years, then taught fifth grade at Lignite from 1964 to 1966. She then taught fifth and sixth grades at Portal from 1966 to 1968, returning to teach fifth grade at Lignite for the 1968-69 school year. In 1970, June graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and taught fifth grade at Plaza from 1970 to 1972. While teaching in Plaza, June was selected as one of five applicants out of a field of 1,500, for a Fellowship to the University of North Dakota to study economics. In 1973, June became a writer for the Burke County Tribune, doing feature stories of Burke County Pioneers. This preceded her weekly column known as "This Week" beginning in 1975. June also cared for her blind mother, at the Bowbells farm, from 1975 until her death in 1985. After 1985, she enjoyed numerous excursions using the Amtrak train system and a cruise to Alaska and bus trip to Branson, MO. In 1995 a family reunion and 50th Wedding Anniversary of Robert and June was celebrated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Visiting children, grand and great grandchildren were always a highlight of her retirement years. In 1994, a house was purchased in Noonan and time was divided between living there and the farm. June served as president of the Noonan Senior Citizens until more attention was required to care for her husband. After the death of her husband in 2005, June began singing with "The Music Makers," entertaining residents at the Crosby nursing home. After 2005, she and her special friend Johnny Baker of Noonan looked out for and kept each other company until his death in 2012. She had been well cared for at the Crosby nursing home since March of 2011. June was preceded in death by her husband, Robert of 59 years; parents; sister, Honoly; and brothers Royal and Donald. Survivors include brother Kenneth, Kent, WA; daughter Carole Jean (Lyle) Hodgerson, Riverside, CA; sons G.R. (Judy) Swenson, Valley City, Willis Swenson, Noonan, Lee Alan (Jean) Swenson, Stanley, daughter, Mary Ann Vig (Swenson), Bowbells; 10 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
