Born Dec. 29, 1924, on the family farm in rural Hillsboro, he was the son of Albert H. and Ruby E. Leazer Hoyer. On May 23, 1948, he married Dorothy "Louise" Sawvel in Moravia. Hoyer, 87, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Hillsboro, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Mount Pleasant. Born Dec. 29, 1924, on the family farm in rural Hillsboro, he was the son of Albert H. and Ruby E. Leazer Hoyer. On May 23, 1948, he married Dorothy "Louise" Sawvel in Moravia. Mr. Hoyer co-owned Van Syoc-Hoyer Auction and Realty which became Van Syoc-Hoyer and Cornick Auction and Realty. He later formed Hoyer Auction Service with his sons, Marty and Jeff. He also sold real estate and farmed. He attended country school and graduated from Salem High School in 1941. In 1952, he graduated from Reisch Auctioneering School in Mason City. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Salem Congregational Church and Salem Simpkin-Pidgeon American Legion Post. He served as a Little League coach when his sons were young, on the Lewelling Quaker Shrine board and as master of ceremonies for Salem Old Settlers parade and programs. He helped develop the early fall festivals for the Catholic churches, served on the Pilot Grove Savings Bank board, was a Cedar Township trustee and, during Old Threshers, was the barker for the medicine wagon and announced the Labor Day horse pull. He was the 1968 Iowa State Champion auctioneer and served on the Iowa Auctioneer Association Board and as state president of the organization. He enjoyed going to dances with his wife, visiting with friends over coffee, boating, playing cards and time his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Karen Jacobsmeier of Salem; three sons, Steve Hoyer of Salem, Martin Hoyer of Burlington and Jeff Hoyer of Hillsboro; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
