The Washington state and territorial censuses in 1885 and 1887 show Just living in Spokane County as a single farmer. His country of origin is given as Denmark and estimated birth year 1847 or 1848. The Alberta Homestead records include his application to prove the homestead. The file includes his naturalization as a British subject, dated April 5, 1898, saying his previous residence was Washington, U.S.A. Signed by Judge Charles B. Rouleau. The homestead application for SE quarter of Section 34, Township 45, Range 21, west of the 4th Meridian was started after his death. The witness statements were dated November 1900 and Judith's statement was dated January 1901. They stated that Just had entered the country April 15, 1894, taken entry for the homestead August 31, 1894, built a house in the fall of '94 took residence in the fall of '95 and was in continuous residence thereafter until his death in 1898. His wife took residence in the spring of 1896. By 1901 there were 65 acres broken and 66 acres in crop in 1898; 24 horses 50 cattle and 25 pigs. The 18' x 24' house was built of logs and valued at $500.00. Three miles of fencing was installed at a value of $256.00. There were 5 stables, 2 granaries, 4 sheds, kitchen, pig house, hen house, smoke house, well house, and 2 wells, value $915.00. On the 1901 application, only 32 acres were in crop. Just must have worked off of the farm during the first winter of 1894, in order to accumulate the cash necessary for fencing, etc., possibly at the mine in Bankhead, Alberta, near Banff. Judith's statement says that Just was already living on the land when she "came to the country in the spring of 1896." The homestead record also includes the letters of administration to divest his estate to Judith, dated July 25, 1901. The patent for the homestead of SE 34, Twp 45, Rge 21, W4, was issued Sept. 13. 1901 to Judith Jensen. Signed by Perley G. Keyes. The C.P.R. Land Sales records for the NE quarter of Section 27, Twp 45, Range 21, W4, show the 160 acres being sold for $3.00 per acre and paid in full April 22, 1898. Just must have had the good fortune to be able to add to his holdings that year. The file also notes that the quarter was assigned to Ole Carl Scheie on April 26, 1906 as the administrator De Bonis Non Administratis of the estate of Just Jensen, deceased. The two quarter sections were adjacent, SE 34 being directly north of NE 27. In March 1898, Just was appointed to be the returning officer for Twp 45 and a portion of Twp 46, Range 21, for an upcoming election. Unfortunately, Just and his horses were fording the Battle River in September 1898 at a time of high water. He was swept away and his body was not found until late November. Judith had given birth to their first son Peter Andrew Jensen April 17, 1897. She was pregnant with Oscar Cornelius Jensen at the time of Just's death. Oscar was born May 8, 1899.
