Description	:	Karen B. Uhde, 75, of Thornton, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2018, at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 12, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with Rev. Rodney Meester presiding. Interment will be at a later date. Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Retz Funeral Home 107 N. 2nd St., Thornton. Uhde was born July 24, 1943, in Meservey, a daughter of Louis and Tena (Boelman) Dirks. She graduated from Thornton High School with the class of 1961 and attended Mason City Community College. She then worked for several years at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital as a switchboard operator. Karen was united in marriage with Frank E. Uhde, January 25, 1969, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey. They lived in Oklahoma and Wisconsin as he served in the Army. They returned to Iowa in 1974 and to Thornton in 1980. Karen worked as a Teacher's Aide at Meservey-Thornton Schools and cook for the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Department. She loved to spend time with her family, quilting and working at her church. She was a prolific quilter who gave quilts away to all her family and anyone who needed one, even strangers. She is remembered as supportive of her family and was the ‘glue that held them together.' Karen is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Frank; children: Jeana (Aaron) Vradenburg; James Uhde; Janace (Aaron) Knapp; Kim (Ralph) Hamand; Dori (Mark) Sparby; Frank (Tonya) Uhde; 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; brothers: Ronald Dirks; Jim (Nancy) Dirks; John (Cindy) Dirks; sisters-in-law: Elsa Dirks and Rosie Davis; brother-in-law: ‘Butch' Myron (Jan) Uhde and many relatives and special friends including the flamingo girls. Karen is preceded in death by her parents; brothers Louis, Robert and Jerry; sister Doris; and granddaughter Jennifer Hamand.
