Description	:	Babies, children and meeting the Mound City ladies for coffee with her mother were some of the things that brought enjoyment to Karen Brockel of Redfield and formerly of Mound City. She also looked forward to getting the local newspapers, keeping up with all the local news. Marie especially enjoyed attending her nephew Jason's school activities and especially loved getting pictures of his family. She was very close to many of the SDDC clients and the employees. Karen Jean Brockel passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. She was 63 years old. Karen was born September 29, 1944, to Leo and Marie Brockel in Mobridge. Karen was raised on her parents' farm southeast of Mound City, attended grade school at the Bertsch country school, and participated in a special education program at Aberdeen for two years. From 1964 to 1978 she lived at SDDC in Redfield. She then lived at various LIVE Centers until 1989. Then she moved in with her parents in Mound City until 2000, when she moved back to SDDC in Redfield where she resided until her death. Karen was baptized at the Bethany Lutheran Church in November 1944, and confirmed in 1960, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mound City. Karen was currently a member at Norway Lutheran Church. Karen is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Marilyn Brockel of rural Java; her sister and brother-in-law, Nancy & Kenton Kaufman of Rochester, Minn.; one nephew, Jason Brockel and his wife Teresa and their daughters, Hope and Haley all of Rapid City. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Marie Brockel. Funeral services for Karen were Friday, Feb. 29 at Norway Lutheran Church, rural Glenham, with the Rev. Dennis Fonkert officiating. Burial was in the Mound City Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Casketbearers were Dean Wessel, Merle Schuetzle, Deb Roebuck, Kenton Kaufman, Jason Brockel and Ken Brockel. Ushers were LeVern Larson and Steve Prasek. Karen's cousin, Marlys Bratsveen of Bellevue, Neb., was the organist. Mobridge Tribune March 5, 2008
