Memorial services were 10 a.m. Saturday at Gretna United Methodist Church in Gretna, Neb., with the Rev. Mark Holland officiating. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Saturday in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Coleridge, Neb. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Saturday in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Coleridge, Neb. Karen Kathleen Alter was born Sept. 26, 1945, in Omaha, the daughter of Frank and Karen (Gottschalck) Alter. She graduated from Westside High School in Omaha. She then worked at various jobs in the Omaha area. In September 1967, she and George M. Thompson were united in marriage in Omaha. The couple moved to Coleridge, Neb., in 1973. She operated the Potting Shed from her home, specializing in garden and bedding plants. She would later become employed at Goldenrod Hills in Wisner, Neb., a community action organization. This work inspired her to take classes at Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. She graduated from Wayne State in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in social work. After receiving her degree, she began counseling at the Boys and Girls Home in Sioux City until 1996. She enjoyed working with youth and was well known and respected for the work with them. Over the years, she worked in many facets of human services in Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and Arkansas. In January 2007, her declining health forced her to resign. She moved to Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen in June 2008. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Coleridge and belonged to the Altar Society. She was a pro-life advocate. She was involved in Cursillo in Norfolk, Neb. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She liked dogs, sheep, showing her horses, listening to music, crafts and sewing. In early years, she was a Girl Scout leader for her daughters. She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Kim and Dan Deichmann of Marcus, Iowa, and Heather and Jason Berg of Gretna, Neb.; a son, Jason and Sara Thompson of Omaha; six grandchildren, Jordan, Jared and Jack Berg of Gretna and Alexa Smith, Layne and Adrien Thompson of Omaha; a brother, Ron and Polly Alter of Fort Calhoun, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; and a brother and his wife, Rich and Shirley Alter.
