Piper (see Maple River Twsp) in 1842. He farmed in Germany, served three years in the army, and came to Winona Co., Minn. with his father and brothers. It was there that he acquired 160 acres and a wife, Pauline Hans, a Wisconsin girl whom he married in 1868. In 1881, they came to Cass County. Karl acquired three sections, served on the township board, had business interests including a store at Addison, and held various civic and church offices. The land on which the Canaan Moravian church stands was given to the congregation by Karl. He and a son Adolph, died in a typhoid fever epidemic in 1899. Following Karl's death, most of the family moved to Carberry, Manitoba, Canada and continued farming. Anna married Albert Piper and stayed in Cass County. Karl & Pauline Piper were the parents of 11 children -- Annie, Adolph R., Hulda, Edmund F., John, Paul J., Elizabeth, Arthur, Carl, Ella and Florence. John Piper married Laura Witte in 1908 and farmed near Watertown, Wis. until his death in 1943. His children are -- Ervin, George, Carl, Milton, Alvin, Grace Kelm (deceased), Olive Long and Esther. Esther married Rev. Clarence Wollin in 1943. They returned to the home of her grandfather, Karl A. Piper, serving Bethel Moravian Church near Leonard from 1956 to 1961. Two daughters, Ruth and Eunice, were born in Cass County, son Carl had been born previously in Kenmare, N. Dak. By Esther Piper Wollin 1. The above provides confirmation that the Carl Piper on the headstone of Pauline Piper Memorial# 29178265 is this Karl but using an English spelling of the name as well as giving a maiden name for Pauline. The "Manitoba, Death Index, 1881-1941" database at Ancestry provides complete DOB & DOD w/place of death for Pauline: b. 14 Apr 1852 (headstone says 1854 but then my grandmother's birth is also incorrect on our family headstone) d. 10 Jul 1936 Rural Municipality Cartier, Manitoba, Canada. The article says she was b. Wisconsin as do the censuses so that too could be added to her memorial. 2. Ella Pauline Piper Memorial# 29222566 - headstone inscription says she's the child of Carl (English spelling again) & Pauline & the above bio on Karl lists her as one of the 11 children so she can be linked to Karl & Pauline's memorials. Since the family is stated as living in Cass Co, ND in the book, Ella's place of birth & death could be updated to Cass Co, ND. 3. Likewise son Adolph Memorial# 29221395 can be linked to Karl & Pauline & his place of death updated to Cass County, ND. His place of birth based on the 1880 census & the above which states Karl farmed in Winona, MN could be updated to MT Vernon, Winona, Minnesota based on the 1880 census. 4. And Anna Elizabeth Piper Memorial# 29222062 can be linked with her husband, Albert Memorial# 29221453 as well as Karl & Pauline. Anna likewise would have been born in MT Vernon, Winona, Minnesota.
