Karlton William Eberling was born April 18, 1933, to Walter and Edna (Heins) Eberling, in Bloomfield Township, near Castalia, Iowa. He passed away Thursday, March 31, 2005, in the Oneota Riverview Care Facility at Decorah, Iowa. He had reached the age of 71 years, 11 months, and 13 days. He was baptized May 26, 1933 by the Reverend R. B. Garten and confirmed April 14, 1946 by the Reverend Frederick R. Ludwig, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Karlton attended the schools of the Castalia, Luana, Waukon areas, and graduated from Postville High School in 1950. On April 8, 1956 Karlton was married to Shirley Schrader in St. Peter Lutheran Church at Eldorado, Iowa, by the Reverend George Goeken. To this Union one daughter, Teresa, and two sons, Kevin and Mark, were born. Karlton farmed all of his life, and for a short time, did milk testing along with his regular milking chores. He was a 4-H Leader for 18 years and served on the Allamakee 4-H Committee and Extension Council. He received the Iowa Farmer Degree in 1950 and has been involved with the Guernsey and Brown Swiss breeds and activities for many years. He was named Iowa Distinguished Dairyman in 1971 and was the Allamakee Pioneer Dairyman in 2000. In 2005 Karlton was inducted into the Iowa State 4-H Hall of fame. Karlton served on the church council and was serving as an Allamakee County Trustee. He enjoyed watching sports and had a special love for his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents and two brothers-in-law, Wesley Bedtka and Ernie McDougall. Surviving are his wife, Shirley, a daughter, Teresa (Lyle) Ewing, Ossian, Indiana, two sons, Kevin (Donna) and Mark, Postville, Iowa, four grandchildren, Karl (fiancee, Jeniffer Biedermann), Lisa, Michael Ewing, Keona Eberling, four step grandchildren, Thomas, Christopher, Michelle and Rachel Severson, and a brother, Lee Allen (Eva) Eberling, Postville, a sister-in-law, Anna McDougall, and special friends, Natasha and Bridget Bennett, and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.
