Her mother was an Iowa native of Norwegian parents, Edward Johnson and Ingeborg Thompson. Her mother's Uncle, Lewis Thompson, lived with them. He had emigrated from Norway in 1882. Karoleen/Carrie had an older sister Irene C. and younger siblings: Kenneth Ervel Leroy(b. 1920), Alvin Willis, Helen Mae(b. 1926) and Esther Rachael Knutson(b. 1928). By the 1930s they lived in Write County and then after her father's death they bought a home in Eagle Grove in Wright County. Her mother was a laundress and Karoleen was a telephone operator in the 1940's census.
