Description	:	Daughter of Johann Stephan Sr. and Elizabetha Frey, born at Kassel, Odessa, South Russia. In early infancy, Karoline became a child of God through, Holy Baptism. After instruction of the Word of God, she was confirmed at age 14 in the Lutheran Church at Kassel, South Russia. She married Adolph Gruszie in February, 1897 at Kassel, South Russia. With husband and young son, Friedrich, she sailed from Bremen, Germany, on March 28, 1898, aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse, arrving in New York on April 06, 1898. She married Adolph Gruszie in February, 1897 at Kassel, South Russia. First home in America was on a homestead north of Eureka, South Dakota. In 1908, they moved to a farm two miles north of Elgin. In 1928 they relocated to a farm two miles south of the Heart River. Retired into Elgin in 1943. Karoline enjoyed good health until 1934 when she suffered and recovered from a mild stroke. During Christmas she suffered another stroke, then had another stroke March 21. A fourth stroke left her paralized and she died at 1:50 p.m. April 17, 1944. Services were held Monday, April 17, 1944, at 1 p.m. at the family home then from First Zion Lutheran Church at Elgin. Reverend E. Widenhoefer officiated. Burial in the church cemetery. Casket bearers were Christ Dietz, John Schelle, Fred Eisenbeisz, Gottfried Schultz and Jacob Permann.
