Karolyn was born April 28, 1941 in rural Scribner, Nebraska to Walter and Hazel (Johnson) Westphalen. As a child, she moved to California for 5 years and then returned to Nebraska and lived at Murphy's Lake near Fremont, then moved to a farm near Washington, NE and after her marriage, returned to Fremont. Sherman, 73 years, of Fremont, NE died Sunday, December 14, 2014 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE. Karolyn was born April 28, 1941 in rural Scribner, Nebraska to Walter and Hazel (Johnson) Westphalen. As a child, she moved to California for 5 years and then returned to Nebraska and lived at Murphy's Lake near Fremont, then moved to a farm near Washington, NE and after her marriage, returned to Fremont. She was a 1959 graduate of Fremont High School. Karolyn Westphalen married Rodney Sherman on June 7, 1959 at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont. Karolyn worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. and the former Nebraska Savings & Loan Co. prior to working as a keypunch operator at Hormel's in Fremont for 29 years, retiring in 2003. Karolyn was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont, where she was a member of the church choir and was an active volunteer at the church. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary in Fremont, the Red Hat Society and member of the former Sweet Adeline's singing group. She belonged to several bowling leagues and card clubs. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, crafts, snowmobiling, dancing, roller skating, boating, water skiing and camping. Karolyn also enjoyed traveling, she and Rodney traveled to all 50 states and to several countries. She is survived by her husband, Rodney; daughter & son-in-law, Colleen and Ted Osterloh of Fremont; son, Marty Sherman and significant other, Marie Gottsch of Nickerson, NE; sister, Kathy Dolezal of Fremont; 5 grandchildren, Seth Osterloh, Nathan and wife, Tonya Osterloh, Kylie Osterloh and special friend, Jared Leland, Matthew Tacner and Jordyn Sherman & special friend, Josh Carpenter; brother-in-law, Gary and Ethelanne Sherman of Fremont; sister-in-law, Kristi and husband, Darrel Brinkman of Bartlesville, OK; and special family members, Cherie & Scott Taylor of Lyons, NE and their children, Bailey, Teagan & Johnathan. She was preceded in death by her parents; and niece, Kelly Dolezal. Funeral service will be 11 AM, Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont. The Rev. Michael Thomas and The Rev. Diana Kuhl will officiate. Visitation with family receiving friends on Tuesday from 6 PM to 8 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation continues on Wednesday from noon to 5 PM at the funeral home. Visitation at church on Thursday 1 hr prior to service. Private burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.
