Katie (Schowalter) Lehmann, daughter of Henry and Katharina (Miller) Schowalter, was born May 7, 1879 on the Schowalter homestead in Norway Township, Turner County, SD, where, together with three brothers and six sisters, she shared the rugged and simple life of the early pioneers of our community. On Sep. 11, 1902 she was united in marriage with C. B. Lehmann with whom she shared life's joys and trials these many years. After marriage she and her husband settled on a farm west of Hurley where they remained for 45 years. Retiring from the farm in January, 1948, she accompanied her husband to their new home in Freeman. She was a loving, faithful wife and mother, of a quiet disposition. Throughout life she enjoyed good health until her first stroke in May 1949 gave warning of the approaching infirmities of old age. The final stroke which caused her death came on Dec. 20, 1950. Just a week later on Dec. 27, 1950, she passed away, having attained the age of 71 years, 7 months and 20 days. Those remaining to mourn her departure are her beloved husband: five children; Albert, Walter, Celia (Mrs. Charley R. Fliginger), Henry and Susanna (Mrs. Reinhardt Preheim); two sons-in-law, three daughter-in-laws; one brother, Ed Schowalter, one sister, Lizzie, (Mrs. Adam Biever)and 16 grandchildren. Four children, two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
