Families had the opportunity to relocate their families to neighboring cemeteries. There was nothing remaining of the early settlers to move to Springfield as burials were 300 years ago. The Cenotaph marker as displayed on this memorial was placed in Springfield Cemetery for the mass of people that were never moved or lost. The Indians ambushed colonists escorting a train of wagons carrying the harvest from Deerfield to Hadley during King Philip's War.
