Brandstrom passed away December 25, 2003 in Burlington, WA after an extended illness. She was born August 9, 1916 to Peter and Mary (Thein) Denis, Territorial Pioneers of Edison. At the age of six months Katherine went to live with her sister, Marie Dahl and her husband Oscar after the death of her mother. She graduated from Edison High School in 1934 after 12 years of perfect attendance. She then graduated from St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Bellingham, WA in 1937. Katherine married Francis C. Brandstrom on June 17, 1938 in Anacortes, WA. She traveled with her husband and family to Oregon, California and eastern Washington in construction. Katherine was employed at the Josephine Sunset Home in Stanwood, WA for 10 years. She served as Director of Nursing Services from 1974 until 1979. In 1945 they purchased and operated Brandstrom's Corner Service with brother-in-law Kenneth Brandstrom. They sold the station in 1981 and retired to Camano Island. Katherine was a member of St. Cecilia Church in Stanwood for many years and after moving to Burlington, she transferred to St. Charles Church in 1993. She was a member of Territorial Daughter, Chapter #2 of Skagit County, Stanwood Area Historical Society, Skagit County Historical Society in La Conner and Sister Xavier Nursing Auxiliary of St. Joseph Hospital of Bellingham. She also volunteered at the Stanwood Senior Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Wayne and Roger; her husband Francis; brothers, Thomas and Eugene Denis; sisters, Marie Dahl and Leona Novotny; nephews, Bud Dahl and Richard Denis; nieces, Dorothy Oswold, Glenda Jones, and Ione Taylor. Her survivors include nieces and nephews, Norm (Pat) Dahl, Ernie (Janet) Dahl, Loren (Joan) Dahl, Juanita Dahl, Geneva Peth Sasnett, Bud Novotny, Anita Haake, Donna Power, Joanne (John) Staffanson, Arlene (Bob) Nelson, and Jean (Richard) Jones; brothers-in-law, Raymond Brandstrom and Ansel (Betty) Brandstrom; and sisters-in-law, Lillian Holton and Mildred Bunney. Funeral services will be held at St. Cecilia Church in Stanwood at 11:00am on Tuesday, December 30, 2003, interment will follow at the Bow Cemetery. Kern Funeral Home of Mount Vernon, WA is in charge of arrangements.
