Description	:	Frank Orom Jr. and wife Katherine (Felt) Frank was born at Dunaföldvár, Hungary, the oldest son and third child of Frank and Frances (Krisztián) Öröm on 22 Nov 1888. He came to Canada at the age of 11 with his family. In his youth Frank was a great trapper - excelling in the trapping of muskrats. At the age of 16 Frank took a job around Calgary and Canmore, working on the railroad. While there, he heard that opportunities for work were better in B.C., so he decided to try his luck there. Read More	Frank Orom Jr. and wife Katherine (Felt) Frank was born at Dunaföldvár, Hungary, the oldest son and third child of Frank and Frances (Krisztián) Öröm on 22 Nov 1888. He came to Canada at the age of 11 with his family. In his youth Frank was a great trapper - excelling in the trapping of muskrats. At the age of 16 Frank took a job around Calgary and Canmore, working on the railroad. While there, he heard that opportunities for work were better in B.C., so he decided to try his luck there. His only choice of transportation was either hopping a freight or walking. Thinking his destination was only fifty miles away, he and three friends decided to walk the their way along the railroad track. As they later discovered, the distance was 300 miles. They walked from Field to Vernon B.C. which took them eleven days. After working in B.C. for a month on a stern wheeler on Okanagan Lake they returned to Calgary and resumed their job on the railway. Wages were $1.50/day but they got a raise of 25 cents a day. In 1906, at the age of 18, Frank took up his first homestead at the former Paul Belter farm. He sold this to Gus Belter in 1913. Then in 1913, he bought the John Meister Place SE 14-14-43-W4, the farm where his son Louis later lived. He bought NE 14-43-22-W4 belonging Steve Dubitz sometime in Oct 1913 when Steve passed away. One summer he broke 80 acres of land with four oxen. Between 1912 and 1915 Frank, his brother Henry, along with their father did a lot of custom threshing, with a steam outfit. Frank was engineer and Henry was fireman. Frank married Katherine Felt on 8 Jan 1913, at St. Michael's Church. It was a double wedding with his sister Elizabeth Orom and John Mraz. This marriage is recorded as the first one at St.Michael's Church. Katherine was born at Dunaföldvár, Hungary on 19 Oct 1895, the 2nd oldest daughter of Michael and Mary (Prajda) Felt. She came to Canada with her family in Sept 1900 at the age of five. After their marriage, they lived for seven years on their original farm, then in 1919, they bought the west 1/2 of 14-43-22-W4 from Herman Falk for $18,000. They moved in Dec 1919, $5000 down and payments of $2600 every Jan 1 for 5 years. He now owned all of section 14. Orom Felt History16 Kate was always a great worker. One fall when threshing time rolled around, Frank discovered that he had been too busy to butcher anything to feed the threshers. Never the less, the next morning the threshers arrived, so they all went out to field hoping Kate would turn up something suitable for dinner. To their amazement, Kate had a surprise for them. There was a pork all cleaned and dressed hanging from the tripod, of which a portion was all ready for dinner. Kate had butchered, cleaned and dressed it all alone before dinner. Another story told about her was when they had men helping thresh. They had eaten dinner and Kate offered them pie for dessert. She brought out a pie and cut it in 4 pieces and gave it to them, when they ate it she offered them more. They said yes so she brought out another pie cut it into 4 pieces and served it. She then offered more, the men said to each other they wanted to run her out of pie. So they each had 2 more pieces, which amounted whole pie for each one. When she offered more they refused being too full. She had 5 more pies left in the pantry. If you never had at least 3 helpings of food she was insulted. It didn't matter what time of the day you arrived she always had a full course meal for you. Kate also was an avid gardener, excellent seamstress and a marvelous cook. Frank in his later years took great pleasure in planting trees around his yard. He loved nothing better than to sit and watch the water run between the rows of trees while he irrigated them. Frank passed away on 12 July 1964 in Bashaw General Hospital and was buried in St. Michael's cemetery. Kate passed away 20 May 1971 in Bashaw and was buried in St. Michael's cemetery.
