Due to advanced age and infirmities incident to old age, Mrs. Katherine Svoboda was called to her reward on Friday of last week, January 26 (1940). She has been in frail condition since the death of her husband last fall, and it was not surprising when the news was passed around of her death. Katherine Hejtmanek was born at Ccncm, Kostelsi, Bohemia, on Dec. 26, 1849 and died Jan. 26, 1940 at the age of ninety years and one month. she spent her early years in the vacinity of her birthplace and there received her education. She was married to Mr.Frank Svoboda May 27, 1879 and to this union were born 6 children, Anita, Mary, Ann, Joseph and two other sons preceded her in death. Mr. Svoboda passed away on Oct. 11, 1839. The family lived in Bohemia from the time of their marriage in 1879 until 1888, when they came to America, coming direct to a farm northwest of St. Paul. Here Mrs. Svoboda helped with the pioneering farm activities of the family and and bore the labors incident to the rearing of the family. In 1915 they left the farm to younger hands and moved into St. Paul where Mr. and Mrs Svoboda made their home until the husband's death in October. Since that time Mrs. Svoboda had made her home with her son, Joseph and his family. Mrs. Svoboda was a conscienctious, hard working person, a splendid mother to her family and a dutiful wife. She was considerate of her friends and neighbors and always tried to do her part. Those left to mourn her passing are the following children: Miss Anna Svoboda of Norfolk, Mrs. Anita Lowman of Seattle, Wash., Miss Mary Boyd of Seattle, and Joseph Svoboda of St. Paul. There are 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Keating Mortuary on Monday afternoon, with the Rev. Wm. J. Primrose in charge of the services. Mrs. S. W. Oleson and Mrs. W. J. Barnes sang "Abide with Me" "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Lord I'm Coming Home." Mrs.Howard Haggstrom accompanied on the piano. Pallbearers were Joseph Kotik, James J. Shalda, Fred F. Haruda, Frank Blazek Sr., Bedrick Lupinek and Edward T. Bartle. Burial was made in Elmwood cemetery beside the body of her husband. The Phonograph extends sympathy to the bereaved children in their sorrow.
