FRANK MAKINS OBITUARY Katherine J. Makins, 95 died Thursday morning at the Highland Personal Care Home. she was born August 28, 1882, in the Solomon Community, the daughter of William and Katherine Berrigan. On September 25, 1907 she was married to Frank C. Makins. Most all of their married life was spent farming in the Abilene area. Mr. Makins preceded her in death November 20, 1967. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Daughters of Isabella. She was also preceded in death by one son CAPT Alfred E. Makins killed in France on September 29, 1944. She is survived by three sons, Murt F. Makins of Bremerton, WA, George E. Makins of Abilene, Donald R. Makins of Naperville, Ill nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one brother, Albert J. Berrigan of Salina. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 A.M. from the St. Andrews Catholic Church with Msgr. Alfred Wasinger officiating. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. The rosary will be recited Friday evening at 8 P.M. from the Danner Funeral Home. She was a "Reporter" This is a rather unusual type of tribute to a fine lady and longtime good friend of many. Following the death of Mrs. Frank Makins, at the age of 95, members of her family found a handwritten letter which contained what might be described as her own abbreviated obituary. It was brief and factual, but included some "memory" references on a subject that was always close to her. For many years Mrs. Makins served as what we used to call a "country correspondent" for this newspaper, even after moving from the farm into town. Her memo recalled starting for the old Chronicle, under C.W. (Red) Wheeler, and also mentioned her work for the late C.M. Harger, editor of the old Reflector, and the present editor of the combined Reflector-Chronicle. While my acquaintance with Mrs. Makins dated back to playmate days with some of her sons, we do have fond recollections of her as a "correspondent" and "tipster" on scores of new items from social events to other goings on about the community. Although she discontinued writing in later years she made good use of the telephone. She called us at all hours of the day -and sometimes at night-to report something or inquire "did you know?" such and such. She was a keen observer of the local scene and was never known to have given us an erroneous tip even though some of them were not always printable at the moment. She called once, saying "I am getting too out of touch" with things to help any more. We continued delivering the newspaper to her free (about all the pay the correspondents, reserved) for some time. She telephoned again to say thanks, but "you mustn't do that say longer, for I am not earning it". That was the genuine type of lady she was. Once of the last of a fading society of old time "country correspondents" devoted to a cherished hobby and sideline, and invaluable in their day.
