Kate was born November 11, 1922 in rural Osage, Iowa to Andrew and Ida (Seffinga) Anderson. Kate attended Worth County Rural School and graduated from Rock Falls, Iowa. After graduation, she attended Iowa State Teachers College, now UNI, where she received her teaching certificate. Her first job was in a one-room school in Oakland Township and lived just outside Popejoy, Iowa. In 1943, Kate married Grant Andersen and partnered with him in farming and raising their 8 children. Kate moved from the farm near Popejoy to Alden in 1969 after the death of her husband. Kate returned to college and completed her education at Ellsworth Community College and University of Northern Iowa. Kate married Raymond Christensen in 1970, adding three more sons to the family. Ray and Kate stayed busy traveling to their children and grandchildren’ sporting event and were also willing to help build, remodel or do anything else that needed to be done for their kids. Ray and Kate traveled the country in retirement and became winter Texans for many years. Kate was a strong advocate for the developmentally disabled. She was instrumental in the development of the Hardin County Work Activity and Career Development Center in Iowa Falls, serving as the first Director for 7 years. She was a founding member Central Iowa Residential Services Inc. in Marshalltown, serving as a board member for 25 years. She also served on the board of Mid-Iowa Workshop and ARC. Volunteering was very important to Kate, saying “You always receive more than you give.” She was active in the Alden community, working on the Alden Community Fund Drive, Alden Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels. She was a Life member of the Alden American Legion Auxiliary, serving in many capacities, especially the Poppy program, sharing her knowledge whenever she could. Kate was an active member of the Alden Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, serving on various boards and committees. Kate also volunteered in Alamo, Texas with the Chamber of Commerce. Kate was a great cook, sharing her creations with family and friends. She even created a cookbook for her family because they kept calling and asking “how to” make something. Kate also loved playing cards and fishing. Some of Kate’s proudest moments were Valedictorian of her high school, receiving the Purple Key at UNI in 1972, Community Service Award for Iowa Falls in 1982 and Winter Texans of the year in Alamo, TX in 2000. But most important to Kate was her blended family. Surviving Kate are brothers Arnold, and Melvin and her children Chris (Anita), Judy (Carol), Beverly Ford, Cathy (Chuck) VanWinkle, Gloria (Tom) Zimmerman, Dale (Kathy), Darla, Kelly Christensen and Marshall (Linda) Christensen and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Kate was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Gladys, Adeline, Bernice, and Darlene; brother Glen’ husbands Grant Andersen and Raymond Christensen and her sons John Andersen and Jeff Christensen.
