She was 10 years old and had made the trip with her mother Martha GILMOUR (a.k.a. Matilda GILMORE née SMITH/SMYTH) and six of her eight siblings: John, Eliza, William, Isabelle, Fanny, and Thomas. Kate's two oldest siblings, James and Ann, were already in America; they had arrived April 28, 1847 aboard the ship SUPERIOR. James and Ann had settled in New Castle County, Delaware and diligently worked to earn money to send back to their family in Ireland so they could come and join them in America. The patriarch of the GILMORE/GILMOUR family, James GILMOUR, Sr., had died in County Tyrone, Ireland about 1846. His cause of death is believed to have been due to "the fever" also known as typhus, an illness found most frequently during times of war and/or deprivation (such as a major famine). The years prior to and following the GILMOURs immigration to the United States were the years known as Ireland's "Great Famine" or the "Irish Potato Famine". It was a period of mass starvation and disease. Approximately 1 million people died in Ireland between 1845 and 1851 and about 1 million immigrated to other countries (primarily North America) resulting in the island's population falling by 20% to 25%. The immigration of the GILMOURs to the United States of America, like many Irish immigrants, gave them the opportunity to survive hardships that had become insurmountable in their homeland of Ireland. Kate GILMORE married Levi NORTON in LaSalle County, Illinois on February 17, 1855. In less than a year, they moved along with other GILMORE and NORTON family members (e.g. parents, siblings, etc.) to Iowa. The state of Iowa became Kate and Levi's permanent home where they raised their children: Jerusha, Eliza, Samuel, Thomas, Fannie, and Emily. DEATH NOTICE. Mrs. Levi Norton, living northeast of Zearing, died at her home Friday evening. Mrs. Norton has been an invalid and great sufferer for a good many years and death came as a relief to her. The funeral services were held in the Evangeliccal church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Lang officiating.
