Description	:	Katherine M. Gaines 94, of Yakima, WA died Sunday, November 10, 1985 in the Yakima Convalescent Center. She was born May 1, 1891 in Rockham to Horace G. and Mary Elvira (Reed) Hurd. She was raised and educated in Hand County, South Dakota. On February 28, 1912, she married John Andrews. He died on September 13, 1913 of sunstroke. After her brother E. Lee's wife died in 1918, she helped him keep the family together, until he married again in 1922. She then moved to Selah, Washington. She was born May 1, 1891 in Rockham to Horace G. and Mary Elvira (Reed) Hurd. She was raised and educated in Hand County, South Dakota. On February 28, 1912, she married John Andrews. He died on September 13, 1913 of sunstroke. After her brother E. Lee's wife died in 1918, she helped him keep the family together, until he married again in 1922. She then moved to Selah, Washington. On September 4, 1923, she married Clifford Gaines and spent most of her married life in Selah. Her husband, Clifford preceded her in death October 15, 1968. She was a long time member of Selah Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was currently a member of the First Baptist Church in Yakima, Selah Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Selah Garden Glub and the Selah Women's Club. Survivors include two nieces, Thel Findley and Maria Hurd, both of Yakima and other nieces and nephews. She was the last member of the Horace G. Hurd family, a pioneer family in Carleton Township, Hand County, South Dakota. A nephew, Wilbur Hurd and family are Hand County residents. Her funeral was November 13, 1985 at the Shaw and Sons Funeral Chapel. Interment was in Terrace Heights Memorial Park, Yakima, WA.
