Katherine "Kathy" Marie Hartman (Haster), 75, of Sioux City Iowa passed away peacefully Thursday, October 14th, 2021 at St. Luke's Hospital with her son by her side after a 6-month battle with lung cancer.
A memorial service will be held and announced at a later date. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Katherine was born on Sept. 4th, 1946 in Pipestone MN to Roman and Gladys (Rasmussen) Haster. At the age of 2 or 3 the family moved to a farm in Little Falls WI, where she was initially pestered and chased by one of the roosters on the farm. Unfortunately for the rooster, his antics landed him on the dinner table prematurely. The family then returned to Pipestone where she attended Pipestone schools from K-2, followed by Sioux City Iowa schools from 3rd grade on. Namely: Washington, Immaculate Conception, St. Joseph's, Woodrow, and then graduated from Central High School in 1964. During High School she worked part-time at the Toller Drug Starlight Room restaurant - 21st and Court, and then the Minute Chef restaurant – 4th and Pierce. Following high school, she remained employed in the hospitality industry at various locations in Sioux City working at the Marina Inn, SoDrak Park, Ron's Steak and Brew, Tail 'n Ale, the BratCellar, and Donavan's reef. She married Francis L. Blassl in 1964. They later divorced. She married Kenneth Dean Sunderman around 1973, and they then moved to the Eau Claire / Chippewa Falls WI area. Shortly after that, they moved to Cedar Falls Iowa in 1975. They divorced in 1976. She remained in the Cedar Falls / Waterloo Iowa area for several more years and continued working in the hospitality industry. She worked as a bartender at the Waterloo Country club where she served Ronald and Nancy Reagan during one of their campaign stops. She was skilled and worked in all facets of the industry which included bookkeeping and managerial roles. Her final, and subsequently favorite job was when she was employed at the Waterloo Iowa Airport. She loved serving and interacting with people from all over the world and the airport provided the perfect venue for that. She married Lawrence D. Hartman on Jan 15, 1982, in Rochester, Minn. and they made their home in Sioux City Iowa up until Lawrence's passing on Jan 2, 2002
Mom was very resourceful, worked hard, and maintained a guarded position with friendships until there was sufficient evidence that a trusted relationship could be established. She loved dogs and would always need an update from her son or daughter on how their dogs were doing and loved it when they would visit. Mom enjoyed talking on the phone and would always take down notes about what was discussed. She had a regimented schedule, constantly documented things, and emphasized how important diet and exercise was. She had excellent penmanship and arithmetic skills. She frequently walked the Skywalk at St. Luke's hospital, and exercised at the Senior center on a regular basis until she became ill. She was a disciplined fan of an occasional salted nut roll, Bavarian crème donut, or a $1 cup of Fanta Orange soda or Diet Coke from McDonald's. In her retirement she found good food and entertainment at the Hardrock café and local casinos in the area.
Left to reflect on their memories with her are her son, Duane (Sherrylynn) Blassl of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Deborah Mondry of Oakland, OR; grandchildren, Katie and Michael (Duane), Justin and Kyle (Deborah); great-grandchildren, Cooper (Katie), and Karson and Karter (Kyle); siblings, David Haster, and Don Haster.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister (Karen Tague).
