Description	:	Katherine McGrath was born in 1859 in Carlow County Carlow, Ireland. She married John Patrick Darcy in 1880 and they moved to Warrington, England after the wedding. In Warrington three children were born to Katherine: John Patrick Feb 15,1881; Mark Pierce Jan 8, 1883; and Margaret March 6, 1885. While in Creighton, Ne five more children were born: Michael Frances 1887, Joseph L., Catherine Eleanor, Mary Agnes, and Ellen Frances. Read More	Katherine McGrath was born in 1859 in Carlow County Carlow, Ireland. She married John Patrick Darcy in 1880 and they moved to Warrington, England after the wedding. (He was the first child born in this country, while his mother was desperately homesick for Ireland. She was almost overcome by the bleak prairies of Nebraska and the small, dark, sod house where the five of them were living. I wonder what, if any, effect that had on him emotionally.) His first wife and their unborn child had died during the flu epidemic. During World War l Michael Frances Darcy was an ambulance driver, and was long haunted by those memories. He married Angela Kavanaugh and they had no children. He died in 1942 at the age of 55 at Grand Island, Nebraska. Margaret became a Catholic Nun, Sister Mary Wilhemina; Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Children born to John and Katherine McGrath Darcy in the United States who survived childhood were: Michael Frances ( b, 20, May 1887, d. 1944); Joseph L.(b. 10 Mar 1888, d. 5 Aug 1913); Catherine Eleanor (b. 5 Feb 1891, d 11 Nov 1978); Mary Agnes/Mame (b 6 Nov. 1896); Ellen (b 13 Sep 1898, d 3 Dec 1895). Katherine McGrath Darcy died in 1929 and John Patrick Darcy died May 28, 1945; John Patricks married his second wife Stiene Hanson in 1931. Stiene Hanson was born in Jutland, Denmark in 1860 and died in Creighton, Ne. on Oct 29, 1952. The community was saddened Sunday morning, Oct. 4, 1859, to learn that Mrs. John Darcy, Sr. had passed away at her home following a prolonged illness, she suffered a stroke of paralysis on March 26,1920 . Catherine McGrath was born in County Carlow, Ireland on Sept. 8, 1859, she died at the age of 69 years, 10 months, and 36 days. She married John Darcy at Carlow, Ireland on May 18, 1880. The moved to Warrington, England following the marriage. They resided in England until 1886 coming to the United States in that year, directly to Creighton. They lived in Creighton for several years, later moving to a farm south of Creighton. They later removed back to Creighton, Nebraska, they resided in this city for about twenty years. Ten children were born to this union, three of whom proceeded the deceased in death. Surviving relatives include her husband and seven children; John and Mark, and Mrs. Frank Pryor of Emerson, Nebraska; Mike of Winner, South Dakota, Sister Wilhelmina of Chicago; and Mrs. Clem Williams of Osmond, Nebraska and twenty grandchildren. Mrs. Darcy was a beloved woman of the community and was well liked by her neighbors and friends for her graciousness and kindness. She was one that bore the respect of all, and her passing is deeply mourned by everyone. Kathleen suffered a severe stroke at her home on March 26, 1920 which effected her right side and speech, Mrs Emil Koepke hel[ded care for Kathleen following her stroke. Funeral services were held Tuesday Oct. 6, 1929 at 9:00AM. A solemn requiem high mass was celebrated by Father Keans of Wayne, Nebraska, Father Brady of Plainview, Nebraska and Father O'Flynn of Lynch, Nebraska. The church was filled with friends of the family of the deceased who came to bestow a final tribute to this good woman. The body was interred at the Catholic cemetery in Creighton. Active pallbearers were John Kennedy, Peter Richling, James Manion, Joseph P. Ryan, E.J. Healey, and Stephen Mattern. Honorary pallbearers were Mesdames John Hudges, Stephen Mattern, John Rotenburger, Joe Stodddard, Frank Kain and Mary Dedlow. The news joins with the many friends of the family in extending heartfelt sympathy to the family in the loss of a loving and lovable wife and mother. August 8, 1929 The Creighton News.
