Description	:	"Grandma Kate" was a much beloved grandmother. Wife of George W. Swick, mother to Roland and Clark Swick and grandmother to Bob, Bruce and Barbara Swick. Great grandmother to Maret, Adrianne and Scott Swick and Mike/David/Danny Hastings. Her picture tells it all. A bubbling, happy, positive personality--always. Great grandmother to Maret, Adrianne and Scott Swick and Mike/David/Danny Hastings. Her picture tells it all. A bubbling, happy, positive personality--always. Born to Mennonite parents who emigrated from Galicia, Austria, she grew up in Westbroook MN. She was a wonderful cook and crocheted many afghans for children/grandchildren, which are still used today (2014). After the death of her husband George from TB at the age of 38, she raised her two boys in Bismarck on a milliner's wages--she was the last hat maker for the A. W. Lucas Department Store, retiring in the 1950's. Her boys gave her full credit for her parenting during the recessionary times. She walked everywhere and never owned a car. She was truly a marvel! "Waste not, want not" was her anthem, and her family lived by that slogan quite carefully. They had little in material wealth, but had much love, which was the best of all. She was highly respected and revered by her two sons and grandchildren. Kate was related to most of the Rupps, Herdebus, Kickuls and others of the Mennonite community near Baldwin--all of them cousins with Mennonite roots in Galicia, Austria. From family notes made by Kate Swick prior to her death in 1982 at the age of 96 years: "I was born in Rosehill Minnesota on Dec 20th 1885. My parents (were) John and Elizabeth Rupp. Got my education there. Moved with my parents to Baldwin N Dak April 13th 1902. I worked for the late Mrs. Anna Nielsen Millinery store for several seasons before going to Centralia Wash. Worked for the late Ella Fields Millinery. There is where I met your Dad, Geo. W. Swick. Came back to Baldwin for a short time--later to Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) where we were married Nov 17 1914. Came back to Baldwin where your Dad worked for Mandan Lumber Company. He passed away March 8th 1926. I worked in Baldwin P. O. before coming to Bis(marck). Worked for A. W. Lucas for 26 years. Mother, Father, sisters Pauline (later Garmer), Olga Rupp (never married) and Emilie (later Monroe) passed away before me. Be sure to have Perry undertaker. The Rugged Cross was sung at your Dad's funeral, my favorite song. It would be nice to have all nephews, besides Bob and Bruce for pallbearers." Her death certificate indicated 'no middle name'. She died at the Custer County Rest Home near Miles City, Montana, where her son Roland lived. Definitely gone but not forgotten. Even some of her great-grandchildren, looking at only a photograph of her, remark that they wish they could have known her. The best memorial of all!
