Mrs. Manley was born Jan. 28, 1877, in Brockton, Mass. Known professionally as Katherine Rankin, she was recognized internationally as a trumpet of note and made three extensive world tours in the 1900s with her former husband, Ernest Williams, under the billing of Williams and Rankin. The Ernest Williams School of Music in Brooklyn, NY, which they owned, probably turned out more of today's top ranking brass players than any other school in the country. While the school was in operation, Katherine Rankin formed the famous Gloria Trumpets Quartet, of which she was first trumpeter. For 17 years, they never missed an engagement, were never late, never sick. The Gloria Trumpeters led the welcome home parade down Fifth Avenue when Lindberg returned after his nonstop flight over the Atlantic. They appeared regularly at the Radio City Music Hall and the Hall of Fame dedications. The "Hall of Fame Grand March" was written especially for the quartet. On programs, she was listed as "America's Premier woman trumpeter". Katherine Rankin's name appeared the the forthcoming book, "Pioneers in Brass." In 1947, she was married to Mr. Manley, a childhood playmate. Since his death in 1959, she has continued to spend her winters in Yorktown near her daughter in law, Mrs. John T. Manley, and her daughters, Katherine and Barbara Susan. In the summer, Mrs. Manley has made her home in Freedom, NH. Mrs. Manley was formerly married to Harry Bradford of Brockton, Mass. The body will be at the Amory Funeral Home in Grafton until Tuesday afternoon and then taken to Norfolk for cremation. Burial will be at Old Coweeset Cemetery in Brockton, Mass.
