Kane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Kane of this city, which occurred at Mercy hospital in Davenport at 6 a. m., Friday, October 18, after one week's illness. Miss Kane enlisted as a Red Cross nurse some time ago and was sent to Fort Sill, Okla., by the Red Cross, in January, where she worked untiringly caring for ill soldiers until May, when she was forced to return to Davenport on account of ill health. Her heart was weak and the southern climate did not agree with her. She remained in Davenport from that time. She was called to report for duty at Camp Dodge and was about to leave (on Friday October 11) when she was taken ill and so reported to Red Cross headquarters. She was told not to try to go until she was better. She went to bed and a physician was summoned. It was found that she had pneumonia and her condition was serious from the first. Her parents and sister, Mrs. E. H. Dahl went to Davenport on Tuesday of last week and were with her from that time until she died. The body was brought to Emmetsburg reaching here at 6:35 a. m., Saturday. Funeral services were conducted at St. Thomas church by Rev. M. McNerney at 10 o'clock Monday morning and the body laid to rest in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were si cousins of the deceased, W. P., W. F. and C. J. McNally of this city, E. H. McNally of Ayrshire, Will Joynt and Joseph Kane Jr. During the time of the funeral all of the business places closed their doors and flags were floated in the entire business section of the town as a mark of respect for the deceased and as an expression of recognition of the service she had rendered her country in time of its need. This was the community's tribute of esteem and affection not only for the departed one but for the family as well. Although there is a ban upon public gatherings in Emmetsburg and people were not permitted to congregate in the church the large number of friends that accompanied the remains to its last resting place, attested, in a measure, the high regard that was entertained for her. Miss Kathrine (sic) Kane was born in Emmetsburg township in Palo Alto county on October 23, 1888. She grew to young womanhood in this vicinity and was educated here. She completed a course at Mercy Hospital in Davenport, preparing her for a trained nurse, graduating on June 18, 1914. Since that time she has been practicing her profession. Her efficiency and skill as a nurse has marked her years of practice with more than ordinary success. The untimely death has called from the activities of life a bright, beautiful, cheerful, and promising young lady whose manner, demeanor and lovable disposition made her a favorite where she was known, and were largely instrumental in bringing her sucess in her chosen profession. Her future was full of promise and hope. ... Besides her parents, who are undergoing the sorrow that comes with the first death of a child, Miss Kane leaves six brothers and four sisters to mourn her departure. They are M. P. Kane of Clinton, J. S. Kane of Cando, N. Dak., Charles and Edward of Emmetsburg, Robert and James of Bowman, N. Dak., Mrs. Ed Bradley of Graettinger, Mrs. James Dover of Marengo, Mrs. B. Catron of Camp Crook, N. Dak. and Mrs. E. H. Dahl of Rhame, N. Dak. To them all the Tribune, in union with their many friends, extends sincere sympathy in their bereavement.
