Memorial Fund: St. John Lutheran Church, Arlington EMT’s and Cedar Valley Hospice. Kathleen Marie Hoffman was born February 12, 1925, the daughter of Leopold and Bertha (Putnam) Hoffman of Arlington. Her family were charter members of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Arlington, where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. She was a lifetime, active member of the St. John WELCA and Quilters for 25 years, as well as chairing the committees for the church’s 75th, 95th, and 100th anniversaries. Kathleen first attended the Rural Flower School – District #8 at the age of 4, following the older neighbor children until the teacher relented and allowed her to stay. She went on to graduate from Arlington Public High School at the age of 16 and Upper Iowa University at Fayette. She returned to school to teach elementary grades at the Elgin and Arlington Public Schools. Kathleen met Derrel Johnson of Wadena, IA at a local football game, and several dances later they were married June 24, 1945 in St. John Lutheran Church. She and Derrel began farming with her parents at the Hoffman family farm outside Arlington. This is the land which her German ancestors had settled in 1853, serving as a foundation for past and future generations. Being both a homemaker and farm helper, the farm is where they raised their three children, Monte, Loren, and Lianne. A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Kathleen was interested in documenting her family history and genealogy. She also formed and led the committee for writing the quasquicentennial history of Arlington for its celebration in 1981. Perhaps her most cherished interest was the pride and love of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and maintaining the family farm. Kathleen is survived by her children: Monte (Deb) Johnson of Raymond, Loren (Alison) Johnson of Cape Coral, Florida, and Lianne Johnson of Arlington; grandchildren: Chris (Stephanie), Chad, Kevin, and Aaron Johnson, Michelle (Byron) Evans, and Logan and Janelle Saucer; great-grandchildren: Taylor, Austin (Bethany) Barna, Cameron, Kerrigan, Kayden and Zoey Johnson; step great-grandchildren: Brianna Yittri and Gabe Johnson; great-great grandson: Bryker Myers; brother-in-law: Howard Harkin of Arlington and many nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband: Derrel on March 17, 1989; sisters: Vernita Harford and Virginia Harkin; and a brother: Raymond Hoffman in infancy.
