KATHRYN OSBORNE BIG TIMBER - Kathryn Osborne, 93, went to be with the Lord the afternoon of Dec. 30, 2008. She died in the arms of her loving son, Charles. Katie had been in declining health the last year and this departure from this life comes as a blessing for her.
Katie was a lifelong Montanan and very proud of that fact. With varied trips to New Mexico, California, Wyoming and Texas, she always looked forward to the welcome return back to Sweet Grass County. Katie was born on the family homestead near Rapelje, July 6, 1915, to Elizabeth and William Zindler. Katie was a first generation American and very proud of her German and Russian ancestry. She attended and graduated from Rapelje High School, where she excelled in academic studies and sports. She was especially proud of her basketball skills.
She married Walter Osborne, May 20, 1937, and united in that union until his death in August 1997. They had four sons: Charles (Lois) of Bozeman, Kenneth (Sonja), Gillette, Wyo., Larry (Deborah), Helotes, Texas, and Richard (Becky) of Riverton, Wyo. Katie and Walt built The Fort Cafe and Sporting Goods in the early 1950s and it was a well known rest stop along U.S. 10 until they sold it in the late 1960s. Katie was in charge of the cafe while Walt ran the guns and sporting goods side of The Fort. Katie was actively involved in the Church of God, National Rifle Association, Big Timber Rifle and Pistol Club, T.O.P.S., and The Order of the Eastern Star during her lifetime.
Katie has been a resident of the Pioneer Medical Center since 2002 and enjoyed her many friends that she knew there. Being a proud Montanan, she valued friendships and her many years in Big Timber.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter and 12 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her four sons and their wives, 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Martha Zindler of Billings and Valentine Zindler of Reed Point, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Family requests memorials to Gideons International, PO Box 123, Livingston, MT 59047.
Funeral services are set for Saturday, Jan. 3, 10 a.m., at the Church of God in Big Timber. Graveside committal will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Lowry Funeral Home assisted the family with the services.
