Bottjen Kathryn (Tena) Elizabeth Brodersen Bottjen, daughter of Broder and Margret Brodersen, passed away February 27, 1975, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Sioux City, at the age of 91 years, 3 months, and 3 days. Tena was born on November 24, 1883, at Wyoming, Iowa in Jones County, the second oldest of eleven children. At the age of six years she came to Woodbury County with her parents. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the age of 13 years, at Midway, Iowa. Her confirmation class of 9 was the first class to be confirmed in that community. Tena moved with her parents to Britton, South Dakota, in February 1905. She was married to Albert W. Bottjen in Brirtton, South Dakota, on May 24, 1905. She accompanied her husband to a farm near Battle Creek, Iowa, where he had been farming prior to their marriage. Three children were born to this union. In 1913 they moved to Willow Township near Holly Springs, Iowa. Tena had been a member of the Evangelical and Reformed Church of German City as well as the "Women's Guild." They moved to Hornick in the fall of 1948. Mr. Bottjen passed away March 31, 1954. Tena then joined the United Methodist Church on April 22, 1956. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women of the Hornick Church. Those who preceded her in death were her parents; one infant sister; and her sister, Dora; two brothers, Peter and August; and her only daughter, Anna Elizabeth Kathleen Wink.Tena is survived by two sons, Arnold B.C. Bottjen of Moville, and Clarence A. Bottjen of New Castle, Wyoming; two sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Erna) Strackbein of Correctionville, Iowa, and Mrs. Henry (Asta) Behnke of Los Angeles, California; four brothers, Thomas of Kansas City, Missouri, Carl of Springfield, Missouri, Jens of Britton, South Dakota, and Otto of Los Angeles, California; eleven grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews as well as friends. Her favorite confirmation verse was -- Colossians 3:17 "And whatever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father by him." Another Favorite verse was: Romans 8:28 "And we know that all things work together for good to them who love God, to them who are called according to His purpose." Funeral services were held for Mrs. Bottjen at the Hornick United Methodist Church of Hornick, Iowa on Monday, March 3, 1975, at 10:30 am with Rev. Dale Church officiating and Rev. Duane Bottjen of Wisconsin (grandson of the deceased) assisting, under the direction of the McCullough Funeral Home of Moville, Iowa. Interment was in Memorial Gardens of Sioux City.
