Veola was born Jan. 18, 1912, in rural Sherman County to Henry and Elizabeth (Parker) Dethlefs. Veola was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Rasmussen. Survivors are: sons and daughters-in-law, Gary D. and Ana Rasmussen of Washington, D.C., Paul E. and Gay Lee Rasmussen of Pendleton, Ore., Lyle E. and Carol Rasmussen and Alan R. Rasmussen, all of St. Paul; daughters and son-in-law, Karen E. Seifering of Hereford, Ariz., and Jean H. and Gordon Brown of Daytona Beach, Fla.; 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and sister, Lucienne Michalski of St. Paul. Veola received her elementary education at District 30, and attended her first year of high school at Loup City. She transferred to Elm Creek in 1930. She attended college at Kearney and attained her teaching certificate. Veola taught two years at a rural high school near Arcadia. During this time, her good friend introduced her to one of her cousins, Harold Peter Valdermar Rasmussen. Veola was united in marriage to Harold Rasmussen on March 31, 1934, at the court house in Hastings. The couple made their first home on a farm northeast of St. Paul. She joined St. Peter's Lutheran Church at North Logan where Harold was a member. They later transferred to St. John's Lutheran Church in Cushing. Five of the six children were born during this time. In 1948, the couple purchased a farm just up the hill from the North Loup River north of St. Paul. Their sixth child was born and Harold and Veola raised and educated their children while living in their house by the side of the road. Veola's love of books and knowledge was shared and nurtured in her children. All her children attended college. Harold and Veola retired from the farm and moved to their home in St. Paul in 1988. Harold passed away on April 9, 2000. Veola pursued many interests during her life. She embroidered quilts and pillow cases and enjoyed doing ceramics. Her family was the grateful recipients of many pieces of her lovely handy-work. She loved flowers and spent hours planning the spring planting of her garden. She canned what they didn't eat fresh. Her interest and love of people remained present throughout her life and she welcomed everyone who appeared at her door with food and conversation. She collected tea cups and it was a joy to her to have her many lady friends in for an afternoon with each one sitting down to different place setting. She belonged to a neighborhood East-West Club and No-Lo Extension Club. She and her husband, Harold and her children help build and became charter members of St. Mark's Lutheran Church of St. Paul. She and her family were active in the church and she belonged to the Ladies Circle. Her greatest gift was acceptance of everybody and her never ending love of reading and continued pursuit of learning, which she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Veola was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, twins, Rowan and Owen Dethlefs and Rueben Dethlefs; sisters, Florence Glinsmann and Betty Mae Dethlefs; and a son-in-law, Loren Seifering.
