Description	:	Kathy Christine Lumpkins, 54, of Albuquerque, N.M., formerly of Lima, died at 2:35 p.m. April 30, 2010. She was born in Lima to Ellsworth and Irena Johns. Ms. Lumpkins attended Elida High School and a certification program at a junior college, becoming a registered veterinary technician in 1976. Ms. Lumpkins attended Elida High School and a certification program at a junior college, becoming a registered veterinary technician in 1976. She was a dedicated, hardworking technician, who loved taking care of animals. In 1973, she starting working as a veterinary technician at Bailey Veterinary Hospital, Lima. She also worked at several renowned research corporation including Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute(LRRI); Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology, Triangle, N.C.; Novel Pharmaceutical (also known as Environmental Health Research & Testing Inc.), Durham, N.C.; North Carolina State University School of Veterinary Laboratory Animal Resurces, Raleigh, N.C.; and as a senior research technologist/veterinary, animal care operations at LRRI, Albuquerque, N.M., in August 2005. Through hard work and dedication, she was promoted to the position of animal resource supervisor. While at LRRI, she devoted extra time to understanding the nature of the research in which she was involved. One of her most notable efforts led to the presentation of a poster that caught international attention at the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science National Meeting in Salt Lake City, on October 16, 2006. The poster is titled: Lumpkins, K., Ali, F.N., Fredrick, M., Pollock, Z., Adrian., Bowers, B., Dr. Sonya P. Swing, Dr. Carol L. Emerson, Dr. Ron Couch, Dr. Roger A. Van Andel: Efficacy of Topical Chlorhexidine for treatment of Ulcerative Dermatitis in C57B/L6 MICE. Since then, she was encouraging people on her team through the guidance of Dr. Sonya P. Swing to be more involved in AALAS both local and national meetings. Her recognitions and awards included Awards Laboratory of the Year, CIIT, 1998; and a Citizens Award in 1984, from the Lima Police Department for apprehending a robber in the veterinary hospital. Her generosity was extensive and the memory will live beyond her passing away. She was a kind-hearted and a benevolent individual. She helped the homeless within Albuquerque, N.M., to the best of her ability. She was a philanthropist whose selfless efforts went beyond the American soil to shores in Africa. She extended a helping head to people in Africa and donated money to build houses and rehabilitate families who were displaced by civil and tribal wars. Survivors include a daughter, Tonya Lumpkins; two grandsons, David and Daniel; a brother, Ted Johns; four sisters, Sandy Giles, Valarie Davis, Judy Emehiser and Becky Heffner; many loving nieces, nephews and cousins; and her fiancé, Chrys Obot Akata. Memorial services will be held at a later date at the Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel. She will be buried next to her parents in Memorial Park Cemetery.
