Bruce. Naval Aviation Cadet Chester Keith Bruce was buried amidst full military honors yesterday in the first burial of a war dead here in the present conflict. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester A. Bruce of Hagan [sic: Hegan] Lane, he died June 19 when his ship crashed into the Gulf of Mexico near his base at Corpus Christi, Tex. A large crowd of friends and relatives crowded into Trinity Methodist Church where services were conducted by Rev. H.H. Allen, pastor, and Rev. G.G. Berger, former pastor, now of Vallejo. The casket and chancel were flag draped and banked with hundreds of floral offerings. John Berger of Vallejo, a friend for many years, presided at the church organ and Victor McLain sang The Lord’s Prayer and Ave Maria. Casket bearers were Justin Smith, Willie Cox, Ben Daven, Donald Camper, Paul Berger and Enoch Crumpton. Ushers were Messrs. E.J. Pierce, P.E. Broyles, F.W. Tarr, W.E. Rothe and George Miller. The firing squad, composed of Chico Army Flying School personnel, fired a salute at the cemetery. They were Sgt. R.F. Soma, Pfc. B. Packet, Pfc. L.I. Miller, Pvt. G.W. Nippert, Pvt. O.A. Barnard, Pvt. D.M. Howard, Pvt. A.J. Philips, Pvt. D.D. Johnson. Taps were sounded by Pvt. M.V. Snyder. In keeping with military custom, the flag covering the casket was folded by Cadet Raymond G. McHatton of Corpus Christi and friend of the deceased, and by Sgt. James Bruce of Stockton Field, a cousin. It was then presented to the mother. Nugent Funeral Home handled arrangements.
