Description	:	Keith Edgar Shirk passed away Sept. 23, 2010, at the age of 88 years. He was born on May 21, 1922, in Grundy Center, IA. He was the third of four children – Rex, Max, Keith, and Arlene – 4 years old, he lost his father, so his mother Birdine moved their family from the family farm into Grundy Center. In 1941, he signed up for... Read More	Keith Edgar Shirk passed away Sept. 23, 2010, at the age of 88 years. He was born on May 21, 1922, in Grundy Center, IA. He was the third of four children – Rex, Max, Keith, and Arlene – 4 years old, he lost his father, so his mother Birdine moved their family from the family farm into Grundy Center. While in Grundy Center High School, he earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1939, of which he was very proud. Graduating in 1940, Keith went to Iowa State University to major in engineering. In 1941, he signed up for ROTC and civilian pilot training. By the spring of 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and successfully completed pilot's training for the B-24 bomber. By Aug. 1944, 1LT Shirk was assigned to the 389th Bomber Group, Hethel, England, where he safely guided his crew through 35 missions, including the Battle of the Bulge. By the completion of his tour in March 1945, he was awarded five air medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross before returning home on V-E Day in May of 1945. It was then that he was reacquainted with Anna Marie Hellmich of Conrad, Iowa. The connection was immediate, so after dating for about a week, they eloped to Iowa City on May 19, 1945. And the connection was solid, for they remained married for 65 years. Returning to Iowa State, Keith finished his engineering degree and started a family. Keith and Ann have four children: Tom, Pat, and twins John & Jim. Keith and Ann and their children finally settled in Des Moines where Keith was a structural engineer. Keith worked on many of the Des Moines landmark buildings such as Veterans' Auditorium, the Bankers' Life Building, the Bell Telephone Building and one of the first Des Moines skywalks, for which they received an award. Keith was an active member of the Iowa Engineering Society's Central Iowa Chapter and served as President 1976-77. After a 40- year career as a professional engineer, he officially retired 1987.
