Carmer, 70, of 1315 Chester Ave., died Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Ottumwa Hospital after a lengthy illness. He had been an automobile salesman for many years and was employed by Vaughn Chevrolet for 19 years prior to his retirement in 1962. Born July 15, 1896, in Appanoose County, he was the son of William and Mary Caylor Carmer. He enclosed in the Army Aug. 14, 1918, in Centerville, and served as sergeant first class in Repair Unit 310 Motor Transport Corps in France during World War I. He was discharged Sept. 20, 1919, at Camp Upton, N.Y. His marriage to Sidney Amiss took place Nov. 28, 1936, at Kirksville, Mo. She survives. He also leaves a brother, C.J. Carmer of Santa Ana, Calif., a nephew Charles Carmer of Centerville, and one aunt, Mrs. Maude Bateman of Rock Island, Ill. One brother preceded him in death. The service will be Monday at 3 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gordon C. McMillan of Bethany Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. The casket will be closed at the beginning of the service. Pallbearers will be Roscoe Day, Harold Anderson, Charles Miller, Cal James, Paul Roberts and Donald Reedquist.
