He will be greatly missed. Ken was born on October 24, 1933 to Alden and Myrtle (Paul) Fineran in a small house on the family farm, in Corsica, South Dakota. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1955 with a degree in agricultural engineering. While at Iowa State, he met Regina Edith Brown, and later said that when their eyes met “he just about melted inside.” Ken and Reggie married on June 23, 1957, and were blessed with six children over the next eleven years. Compelled by the Book of James passage “show me your faith apart from your works and I will show you my faith by my works,” Ken put his faith into action by pursuing a Masters in Sacred Theology at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern University, graduating with distinction in 1960. Ken was then ordained as an Elder in the United Methodist Church. In 1964, Ken became pastor at Henderson Settlement, a mission community near Frakes, Kentucky. In 1968, Ken became Director of the Mission in the Valley in Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he worked with local residents to successfully protest an attempt to displace low-income residents for an urban renewal project. He went on to serve as Director of Urban Ministries in Des Moines, Iowa and Crossroads Urban Center, in Salt Lake City, and as pastor for UMC churches in Colorado and Iowa. Over the course of his life, Ken committed himself to helping others to be problem solvers and peace makers when facing political, social, and economic injustices. In 1989, Ken was awarded the Rocky Mountain Conference Peacemaker Award for his work in raising awareness about peace and justice in his community. Ken enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening, camping, backpacking, and canoeing. After retirement, he remained active, working on the Manger Inn renovation project, travelling with the UMC disaster relief response team and singing with the Northfield Troubadours. Ken is survived by his wife of 57 years, Reggie; married daughters Kristin (Steve) Basinger, and Rebecca (Ron) Fineran-Gardner, of Northfield; sons Benjamin (Billie Cartwright) of Redmond, Oregon, and Bryce (Sylvia Redmond) of Sparks, Nevada; nine grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; and his brother George. He was preceded in death by infant sons Michael and Craig, brother Roger, his parents, one infant grandson, and two infant great-grandsons. A celebration of Ken’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at the Northfield United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the celebration. Interment will be at the Columbarium at Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames, Iowa. Due to chemical sensitivity issues, please refrain from wearing perfume, cologne or scented lotions, if you plan to attend the service. Thank you.
