Mr. Ethen was born May 29, 1919, near Binford where he grew up and attended school. On April 10, 1944 he married Shirley Jones in Moorhead. They farmed near Binford. He drove a school bus and worked as a mechanic. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Gary (Carole), Binford, Scott (Renee), Mandan, N.D.; a brother, Wallace, Binford; a sister, Clarice Ethen, Blaine Wash.; three grand-children, three step grand-children, and a great-grandchild. The Forum, Fargo, ND, September 15, 1995 **************************************************** ETHEN WINS $3,000 FIDDLE** Thirty-one is Kenneth Ethen's lucky number ever since Binford's best known fiddle player won a hand made Czechoslovakian fiddle worth an estimated $3,000. Ethen bought raffle ticket #31 from the Parkland Fiddlers Association of Saskatchewan while he was attending the Fun and Fiddle Festival in Miami, Manitoba. "I figured I had thrown five bucks away on worse things than a chance at a fine fiddle but I never expected to win." He said. Ethen has played the fiddle since he was 15 years old and is a fine fiddle maker in his own right, having a workshop behind his rural Binford home where he builds and repairs fiddles. Having worked so extensively with fiddle, Ethen knew what it took to build on of exceptional quality. "The lighter the fiddle the better," is a rule of thumb of the novice. The G. Meissner is surprisingly light giving an impression of being quite delicate. "Old wood has less moisture in it and so it is lighter and gives better tone," explained Ethen. Ethen heard the Czech fiddle played by famed Canadian fiddle player Calvin Bolrath at the festival in Manitobe and was impressed by its clean and rich tone.
