Mr. Blackburn was hit in the head and chest by metal fragments when a farm tractor wheel broke into pieces about 2:45 p.m. Friday. He was taken to Woodlawn Hospital, and less than an hour later to South Bend St. Joseph's Medical Center where he died. Mr. Blackburn's son, Doug [BLACKBURN], said that his father had mounted a 15-inch tire on the wheel and was inflating the tire when the wheel exploded. "Pieces of metal were found 50 feet away," he said. The son said the wheel is from an old John Deere tractor and that it was all of one piece of cast steel. He said no one knows why it broke apart. Doug Blackburn, who works at the shop, was on a service call in the Akron area when the accident occurred. He said he had turned off the air compressor he was using and heard on his two-way radio connection with the shop that his father had been hurt. Doug's brother, K.J. [BLACKBURN], also works at the shop. He was about 10 feet away from his father when the wheel exploded but was not hurt, Doug said. Mr. Blackburn and his wife Tish [BLACKBURN], started Blackburn Tire in 1958 and had operated it continuously with the only interruption being when the Monticello Road building was destroyed by the April 3, 1974 tornado. The present building took its place. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Grace United Methodist Church. Friends may call at the Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, and at the church for one hour before services. Mr. Blackburn died at 11:30 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Medical Center in South Bend of injuries sustained in an accident at his business, Blackburn Tire of Rochester. He was born in Rochester to Elzie C. and Myra P. MOON BLACKBURN, and had lived most of his life in Rochester, except for two years in Wabash. On June 2, 1957 in Rochester he married Patricia Ann "Tish" SWANSON, who survives. He had owned and operated Blackburn Tire Shop for 34 years, opening it in 1958. He and his wife were co-owners of the former Caywood-Foreman ERA Agency in Rochester until earlier this year. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Manitou Moose Lodge and was a charter member of the Rochester Jaycees. He was a 1955 graduate of Rochester High School, was Rochester Township trustee from 1979-1987, and had served on the Rochester Park Board and the Rochester School Board. Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Marc (Julie Lynn) CALVERT, Rochester two sons, Douglas Lee "Doug" and Kenney Jay "K.J." [BLACKBURN], both of Rochester six grandchildren, Corey and Chad CALVERT, Brandi, Brittany and Breeanna BLACKBURN and Grant BLACKBURN, all of Rochester; two sisters, Mrs. James (Elizabeth) ZELLER, Rochester, and Bette CLEVENGER, Beaver Dam Lake, and three brothers, William "Bill" BLACKBURN, Logansport; Robert "Bob" BLACKBURN, Wabash, and John BLACKBURN, Indianapolis.
