Description	:	Kenneth Burton Carmichael, 90, died Sunday, December 14, 2003, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center from complications suffered from a fall in his home. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, December 17th at 10:30 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, Iowa. Pastor David Rogula will conduct the service with organist Angie Radcliff and flutist JoBeth Karr. Casket bearers are the grandchildren and spouses. Kenneth was born December 3, 1913, son of William Herbert Carmichael and Abbie Johnston Carmichael, on the family farm northeast of Brooklyn. He attended McKegg Country School and rode his pony, Spot, all four years to Brooklyn High School, graduating in 1932. He was a member of 4-H Club. and in 1930, he placed second at the Iowa State Fair chicken judging contest. He earned a scholarship to Iowa State College by winning 1st place at the 4-H Congress in Chicago. After a year at Iowa State, he returned to Poweshiek County to farm with his father. Kenneth and his father were one of the first in the county to use contour farming. He was a life long conservationist of the land. He enjoyed working with purebred Angus cattle and Hampshire hogs. On February 25, 1940, he married Ruth Gwendolyn Davidson at her parents' home by Rev. Fred Miller. They farmed in Warren Township for four years. In 1944, they moved to the Johnson Farm west of Brooklyn, which is now a Century Farm that has been in the family since 1895. They retired to a home in Brooklyn in 1988. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for 62 years. He served a term as Sunday School Superintendent and Trustee. Kenneth served as president of the Brooklyn School Board when the present high school building was built in 1964. He was a member and secretary of Poweshiek County Farm Bureau when the current office building was constructed. Kenneth and Ruth delivered "Meals on Wheels" for 12 years. Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Brooklyn and daughter, Karen and Gary Goodrich of St Louis; and two sons currently living on the Century Farm, Richard Carmichael, and Robert and Jessie Carmichael.
