His class was profiled in Life magazine’s study of high schools from across the country. Read More	Ken was born to Calvin and Ann Faris in Great Falls, Montana on July 18, 1936. He attended Central Catholic High School in Great Falls. His class was profiled in Life magazine’s study of high schools from across the country. Ken’s adventurous nature took him west to Seattle, where a scholarship allowed him to attend Seattle University, graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts, Non-Classical. While attending Seattle University, Ken met his wife Shirley of 58 years, the love of his life. Upon graduation, Ken’s career journey started in the United States Army. As a Lieutenant, while stationed in Virginia, he volunteered for a tour of Greenland to get away from Virginia’s summer heat. Upon completion of his Army obligations, Ken worked briefly as a Customs House Broker, then, building on skills learned in the Army, embarked on a long and interesting career in marine transportation. Ken worked for Pacific Inland Navigation on the Columbia River, and later for Crowley Maritime Services in Portland, Alaska, Washington DC, and Seattle. Cycling with friends was Ken’s vocation and joy. He took pride in his yearly accumulation of miles, hoping to do better each year. Ken cycled in all kinds of weather, always well-prepared with gear and snacks. His cycling took him around Oregon, Idaho, and Maui. Ken cycled multiple Cycle Oregon weekend events and on the Hiawatha Trail. At age 80, Ken and his cycling pals took a cycle trip to Eugene and of course the famous “bikeries”-road trips to bakeries. Ken was never one to stay on the sideline, always offering a helping hand to all: family, friends, neighbors, or strangers. He will be remembered for his active volunteering as notary at the Lake Oswego Library, lector at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, and at the Maui Pacific Whale Foundation. Ken was worldly in the written and oral word and enjoyed his travels to Europe, China, Montana, Maui, Alaska and throughout the Pacific Northwest. In recent years, Ken embarked on a Shakespeare class and participated in a local choir for something different and to be enriched. Ken liked to always challenge himself. What you could say in a word or two, Ken had lengthy and detailed explanations. His love of life, family, friends, and community was seen in all that he did and those that he touched. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all. Ken commented, “When I can no longer ride my bike, it is time to leave this world.”
