Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, 28 Oct 2013, at First Grace Baptist Church, Sheffield, with Pastor Ken Livingston presiding. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield. Read More	SHEFFIELD \| On 21 Oct 2013, Kenneth Dale Schaefer passed away peacefully in his sleep, at the age of 77. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday at First Grace Baptist Church. Ken was born 3 Dec 1935, on a farm north of Sheffield, to George and Pearl (Kothenbeutel) Schaefer. He graduated from Chapin Consolidated High School in 1953. Shortly after graduation, he began farming with his father, and continued doing so with his wife until 1990, when a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis forced his retirement at a young age. At that time, he then turned the family farm over to his son, Gary. Ken entered the U. S. Army Reserves in 1958, serving our country for seven years. On 11 Mar 1960, he married his wife of 53 years, Diana Pinneke. To this union, three children were born and raised. He and his wife then moved into town, and later relocated to the Ridgestone Golf Course in Sheffield, allowing him to play golf, one of his favorite activities. In 1987, he and his wife started spending their winters in Mesa, AZ, due to health reasons. That same year, he became associated with a national senior softball team, traveling the U.S. for various tournaments. Ken was a co-manager, score keeper and built many lasting friendships with all the players. He participated in senior softball for seventeen years, and loved each of the guys dearly. Coach’s wife wrote the other day, “God must have had a big game coming on immediately and needed a score keeper quickly and took him to do the job.” Ken also had a big love of his cars and he always remarked to others, “I never put my car to bed dirty.” Ken also had a super good friend, Mike Blaylock of North English, whom he met every morning during the winter months at 8 a.m. for their glass of soda and a cookie, as well as to “FARM.” Together, they were a pair and a spare. Ken also had another dear farmer friend, Wes Beilke of ND, that he kept in contact with frequently, and had known since 1986. Ken may have not been able to continue farming in Sheffield, but found others who were former farmers themselves, who became so dear to him during his time spent in Arizona. Of course, his greatest love was for his family, as he spent many hours with all of them, and especially will be missed by his dear children and grandchildren, who kept in touch through their multitude of visits and phone conversations. His family all looked up to him as a mentor, asking his opinion on a variety of matters, which made him feel so proud. Ken leaves behind his wife, Diana, as well as three children: Jean (Bill) Gallina of Krum, TX, and children, Anthony of Wichita Falls, TX, and Staci of Krum, TX; a son, Gary (Renee) of Sheffield, and children, Kayla (Trevor) Nelson of Hot Springs, AR and Matthew of Sheffield; a daughter, Lori (Mark) Rempe of Pella, and children, twins Karissa of Pella, and Kelsi of Kansas City, MO, and twins Austen and Taelor of Pella. He also is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Schaefer of Mason City, and Ruth Ann Schaefer of Mason City. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, George and Pearl Schaefer, and his in-laws, Ted and Ruth Pinneke. The family requests that memorial gifts be designated to Rheumatoid Arthritis research at Mayo Clinic, in memory of Kenneth Schaefer, in honor of Dr. Lester Mertz.
