Read More	WORLD WAR II HERO DIES AT 90 Kenneth H. Carpenter, World War II combat veteran and editor of the 42nd division's periodical, Reveille, for twenty years, died peacefully on January 4, 2010. Born in Ft. Monroe, Virginia on January 2, 1920, Ken enlisted on August 12, 1942, and volunteered for the 82nd Airborne. As a paratrooper, he participated in the invasion of Sicily in July, 1943 and jumped into Salerno on September 12, 1943. Wounded by machine gunfire and grenades at Altavilla, Italy, he returned to the United States and transferred to the 42nd Infantry Division. He served in France beginning in November, 1944. He was an integral part of the Nordwind campaign until January, 1945 when he was once again wounded. Among his ten medals are the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart with clusters. After his discharge in November, 1945, he returned to his native Baltimore to continue his career as an industrial engineer with Amstar. Married in 1950, he and his wife, Adele, spent many happy years together until her death in 1985. He loved reading, travel, crossword puzzles, football and his family. With incredible organizational and writing skills, Ken became the ideal editor for the Reveille. He began his tenure in September, 1989 and served as editor for the next twenty years. He took great joy in reconnecting with his army comrades and in serving them by preserving their history. He was a life member of the VFW, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Ken is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Carpenter-Smith and son-in-law, Stuart P. Smith of Ponte Vedra Beach with whom Ken lived for the past ten years. A memorial service will be held 11:00am. Saturday, January 23, 2010 in the Chapel of Hardage Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, FL. There will be a private inurnment in Jacksonville National Cemetery.
