Called to active duty and assigned to F Company, 17th Candidates Class, Marine Corps Schools, MCB Quantico, VA. 1 January, 1943 qualified as a Rifle Marksman and on 26 January, 1943 was commissioned as a Marine Corps Second Lieutenant. 27 January, 1943 assigned to the 20th Reserve Officer Class (ROC), MB Quantico. VA. 25 April, 1943 assigned to E Company, Infantry Battalion, Training Center, MCB Camp Elliott, California. 25 April, 1943 assigned to E Company, Infantry Battalion, Training Center, MCB Camp Elliott, California. 6 July, 1943 transferred to D Company, 23rd Replacement Battalion, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. 16 July, 1943 embarked SS President Polk (AP-103) at San Diego for movement overseas. Upon arrival in Wellington, New Zealand, assigned to Regimental Weapons Company, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division at Paekakariki, New Zealand. 30 October, 1943 embarked USS Sheridan (APA-51) at Wellington. 7-13 November, 1943 landing rehearsals at Efate, New Hebrides. 20 November, 1943 landed Red Beach Two Tarawa D-Day and participated in combat operations until 24 November, 1943. 8 December, 1943 arrived at Hilo, Hawaii based at Camp Tarawa near Kamuela. During March, 1944 promoted to 1st Lieutenant. 11 May, 1944 embarked an LST at Hawaii. 12-19 May, 1944 landing rehearsals in Hawaiian waters. 20-25 May, 1944 in Pearl Harbor. 8-11 June, 1944 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 15 June, 1944 landed Green Beach Saipan D-Day and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 19 June, 1944. Next of Kin: Parents Mr Albert H and Mrs Elsie C Smith, 104 South Prospect Street, Maquoketa, Iowa. Initially buried in 2nd Marine Division Cemetery on Saipan. 1948 returned to US for permanent burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.
