Kenneth James Ostroot was born March 20, 1914, in Astoria, South Dakota, to Theodore and Hanna (Quail) Ostroot. The family moved to Crosby, North Dakota, in 1923, and Ken graduated from Crosby High School in 1932. He attended Minot State University for two years where he was on the football and track teams. He taught school at Ambrose and Noonan, North Dakota, for four years. He received a B.S. degree from South Dakota State University in 1941 and a M.S. degree in 1963. Kenneth taught and coached at Geddes, South Dakota, prior to joining the armed services where he served with the 500th Bomb Squadron in the South Pacific during World War II. While in Geddes, Kenneth met Dolores Butterfield. They were married November 11, 1945, at Montrose, South Dakota. He served as assistant county extension agent in Beadle County in 1946 and county extension agent in Lincoln County from 1946 to 1960, prior to moving to Brookings as district supervisor with the SDSU Extension Service in 1961, where he worked until his retirement in October 1977. Kenneth was named man of the year in Canton in 1955, and was active in many civic and religious organizations. He was a charter member of the Canton Lions Club and a charter member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings. He was also active in Brookings Noon Lions Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Masonic Lodge, Golden K Kiwanis, and Farmhouse Fraternity. He spent many hours pursuing his hobby, woodworking. Kenneth is survived by his wife, Dolores, of Brookings; a daughter, Linda (Butch) Salmonson, of Estelline; a granddaughter, Stephanie (Matt) Bebensee; and a great-grandson, Mason Bebensee, all of Brookings; and five sisters: Charlotte Hutchens of Dayton, Washington, Lorna Tyson, Lorraine Ostroot, Rhoda Peterson, and Helen Hammer, all of Bismarck, North Dakota.
