Description	:	Obit: Wausa Gazette Services for Kenneth L. Backhaus, 71, of McLean were held Monday morning at St. Frances Catholic Church in Randolph. The Rev. Ronald Battiato officiated with burial in the parish cemetery. A rosary was celebrated Sunday evening at the church. Mr. Backhaus died Friday, April 17, 1998, at his home. The son of Rudolph and Anna (Schwarz) Backhaus was born Sept. 6, 1926, near Osmond. He attended rural school near Osmond and McLean Public School. A rosary was celebrated Sunday evening at the church. Mr. Backhaus died Friday, April 17, 1998, at his home. The son of Rudolph and Anna (Schwarz) Backhaus was born Sept. 6, 1926, near Osmond. He attended rural school near Osmond and McLean Public School. He married Alice Jean Veik on Feb. 11, 1946 at Randolph. He started his own livestock trucking business at the age of 17 and also operated his own corn shelling business. He had owned and operated Backus Sand and Gravel in the area since 1954. He also owned and operated Backus Sand and Redimix in the area from 1959 to 1992. He served as mayor of McLean for 30 years and was a member of the McLean Fire Department and St. Frances Catholic Church in Randolph. Survivors include his wife; sons, Jerry and wife, Cheri, Jim, Doug and wife Sheri, all of McLean, Rick of Osmond, Gary of Hartington and Scott and wife, Gina of Randolph; and daughters, Judy and husband Wayne West of Pierce, Lynette and husband Gary Janssen of Burnt Hills, N.Y. He also leaves 24 grandchildren; six great grandchildren and one step great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, brother, sister and granddaughter.
