Always the jokester, even in the face of major trama, he was teasing the nurses and aides almost up until the end of his life. Kenneth Lee Messick was born October 10, 1935. He passed away at the Avera Rosebud Country Care Center on November 4, 2010. Kenny was the second child born on the family farm to Everett and Esther(Zeller) Messick. He attended the Pocahontas School near the farm for eight years. He graduated from Gregory High School in 1953. Kenny often spoke fondly of his years as a track star with Coach Glen Burgess. He held the school record in the 100 yard dash for a period of time . On June 21, 1953 he was united in marriage to Edith Mae Drey. They worked in Tacoma, WA for six months and they later returned to ranch and farm with Kenny's parents. To this union was born Michael, Calvin, Robbie and Becky. The family moved into the home on the farm after Everett and Esther moved into their new home in Gregory. Kenny also worked part time for Curtis Trucking in Winner, SD and Opperman Sand, Inc. of Gregory during the winter months. Kenny and Jackie Ainsworth were married on July 20, 1977. Their son Tyler was born in June of 1979. Kenny co-managed the Winner Bowling Center, formerly known as the Galaxy Inn and Star Lanes until 1981. The couple moved to Sumas, Washington, where they owned and operated the Annex Restaurant and Lounge until it sold in 1989. Kenny later owned and operated a pawn shop in Spearfish, SD and he later worked near Gregory for a summer with a road crew. Kenny was a man who seemed to outwit death like a cat with nine lives. He survived two serious truck accidents, one which left him severely burned. He received three skin grafting operations as a result. Kenny suffered a major stroke in 1990 which left him permanently disabled. He also had gall bladder surgery, heart surgery to put a stint in, two separate operations for abdominal aorta aneurysms, years of kidney dialysis, and a broken hip. Through it all, Kenny kept his sense of humor, endearing himself to family and healthcare providers alike. Kenny had a very special rapport with all kids. They seemed to love him instinctively, and the feeling was more than mutual. He had a special grand niece who was only three when he always called her his "Sweetie." Six years later, she still remembers that. He helped many of us become kinder, gentler individuals as a result of this modeling. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Esther, a brother Roy; two brothers-in-law Charles Good and Clarence Miedema; a son-in-law John McIntyre and grandson Drew Reuer.
