Description	:	OBITUARY FOR KEN L. CREES -- Kenneth Leon Crees, the son of James L. and Edna J. (Madsen) Crees, was born in Audubon, Iowa, on April 11, 1931. CREES -- Kenneth Leon Crees, the son of James L. and Edna J. (Madsen) Crees, was born in Audubon, Iowa, on April 11, 1931. He graduated from Audubon High School in 1949, and began working as a surveyor. Ken then served in the U.S. Navy for ten years, from 1952 - 1962. On June 16, 1956, Ken married Joan M. Mathisen at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Audubon. After Ken's discharge from the Navy, he held various jobs, including driving an Omar bread truck, selling advertising, working at Super Valu in Audubon and Harlan, Iowa, and working at SDI as a garden center salesman. He was later employed at the Western Iowa Pork Plant in Harlan. In 1968, Ken opened Crees Garden Center in Harlan, which he and Joan operated until his 1996 retirement, when he sold the business to his son, Dan. After retiring, Ken and Joan built their home in "Cresthaventown", as their granddaughter named it. Ken served as general contractor and worked in all phases of the construction. Ken was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, where he recently sat on the Board of Properties. He was a member of Shelby County VFW Post 941 in Harlan. Ken loved children, and he always had Tootsie Rolls for the young ones who visited the Garden Center. Family was important to him, and he enjoyed spending time having coffee and visiting with both family and friends. He also followed local sports activities. Ken L. Crees died on Saturday, June 19, 1999, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 68 years, 2 months, and 8 days. Preceding Ken in death were his father, James L. Crees; one daughter, Julie Crees; one brother, Don Crees. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Joan Crees of Harlan, Iowa; his mother, Edna Crees of Audubon, Iowa; three daughters, Cindy Robillard and Lauri (Jeff) Bates, both of Doraville, Georgia, and Cathy Crees of Des Moines, Iowa; two sons, Dan (Natalie) Crees of Harlan, Iowa, and Jeff (Staci) Crees of Van Meter, Iowa; two sisters, Betty (Everett) Schmidt of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Carol (Dwain) Thompson of Exira, Iowa; his mother-in-law, Mabel Mathisen of Elk Horn, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Charlene (Russ) Jespersen of Elk Horn, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Rick (Bev) Mathisen of Maple Valley, Washington; ten grandchildren, Kelly, Marissa, and Scott Robillard, Ryan and Alyssa Bates, Jason, Briannam, and Travis Crees, and Amber and Allison Crees; and other relatives and many friends. -------------------------------------------- In loving memory of Kenneth Leon Crees -- the funeral service was Tuesday, June 22, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Jon Benson officiated. Barb Fremder was the organist and Darla Hansen was the soloist. Musical selections included: Daddy's Hands, On Eagle's Wings, I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry, and Amazing Grace. Casket bearers were: Bert Hillers, Chad Mathisen, Randy Jespersen, Brett Schmidt, John Schuning, and Randy Thompson. Burial was at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
