He was surrounded by family in his final days. Kissed goodbye by his sons, Pete and Kelly, and his hand was held by daughter-in-law, Kathie, as he took his last breath here on earth. The youngest child of Anders P. and Mae Nelsen, Ken was born September 26, 1925 in Norma, North Dakota. He married the love of his life, Shirley Christine Ramsdell on October 25, 1954. For 56 years their enduring and constant love was one of the hallmarks of Dad's life. Their happy marriage blessed them with five beautiful children: Lowell (1955), Pete (1956), Paula (1959), Kelly (1965) and Donnie (1966-85). Hospitality and generosity were also hallmarks of Dad's life; he and Mom opened their home to 19 Foster children over the years. Ken lived in an era long since forgotten. When a man's word was his bond, and a handshake was a contract. Those less fortunate were helped, and your doors were always open and unlocked. No one, was a stranger. Honesty and integrity weren't just words, but life's standard. With true honor Dad served in the Korean war. Dad loved his country and considered this his patriotic duty. Because of his service he received the Korea Service Medal with Bronze Star, United Nations Korean Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. His children never heard of these medals until after his death, while going through papers. Humility was Dad's way. There is not one person who knew Ken, who won't acknowledge he could fix, build, construct or repair anything. He really was a Jack of all trades. A true craftsman in wood, metal or machinery. Ken passed this amazing gift of working with his hands, to his sons, Pete and Kelly. One of Dad's hobbies was auto racing and his sons speak in reverence of those days. Memories of being taught auto mechanics as very young boys and being Dad's pit crew as teens. Auto racing for the Nelsens consisted of going to the race track and teething on a tire as a toddler. How they loved it! Ken worked most of his life for APL (American President Lines) in Seattle as a waterfront mechanic. He retired in 1990. Two of his sons followed him to the Waterfront where they have had careers as mechanics for 37 and 27 years. Ken is survived, and will be deeply missed by his four children, Lowell, Pete (Debra), Paula (Nels), Kelly (Kathie); along with his six grandchildren, Ginger (Justin), Daniel, Beth, Nick (Megan), Kelsey (Ed) and Heather and his four great grandchildren, Parker, Sydney, Derick and Ellah. He is also survived by his wife's siblings, Bill and Tudi (sister) Otten, Pat (brother) and Marie Ramsdell; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Dad is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, of 56 years; his youngest son, Donald; mother and father; brothers, Gordon, Loren and sister, Marion. A private family burial will be at GAR cemetery February 20, 2015 at 1:00. The Memorial Reception- Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2015 11:00 - 1:00, at Hope Foursquare Church, 5002 Bickford Ave Snohomish, WA.
