He was pre-deceased by his wife of 69 years, Marceina Mae Carlson of Aurora, who passed away on Dec. 14, 2011. Kenneth was born in York County at the family farm by Bradshaw on Nov. 14, 1922. He leaves behind his daughter and her husband, Bonnie and Lawrence Schlink of North Carolina, and their three children: granddaughter, Tracy Marie Schlink Koivisto and husband, Shawn, and great-grandson Geoffrey Ford of North Carolina; grandson, Toby John Schlink, wife, Jennifer, great-granddaughter, Baley Rose and great-grandson, Wyatt Chase of North Carolina; grandson, Anthony Paul Schlink, wife, Audrey, great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Paige, her husband, Chris Wiedyk, and great-great-granddaughter, Angelyn Paige and great-great-granddaughter, Alyssa Paige Schlink, all of Michigan. Kenneth was the son of Ira and Ethie Herrold of Grand Island and previously of Aurora and York. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Barbara, and brother, Irvin Herrold. His living relatives are a sister, Alice Scott Wilkinson of Arizona and Missouri; a sister-in-law, Delavon Herrold of Grand Island; and a nephew, Randall Herrold of Phillips. There are also numerous nephews and nieces scattered about the states. Kenneth was a farmer in the Murphy region of Hamilton County for the majority of his 70-plus working years. Here he excelled and was awarded several times as the top crop producer for dry land and irrigated land for both corn and sorghum. He served on several boards, including the Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation. He and his wife provided a portion of land to the State of Nebraska for use in determining the underwater levels and their fluctuations. Ever proud of his contour farming conservation and soil preservation while irrigating, he strongly believed in the family small farm concept for the longevity of the land preservation and usage. He was appointed by the Governor of Nebraska to serve for several years on the state and local soil and water conservation boards. Kenny kept an active involvement with his strong political feelings and didn’t hesitate to voice his opinions. He was currently working against political agendas with his last days, especially on negating the Keystone Pipeline, which he felt could contaminate the precious aquifers in the plains. For years his love for music, which started with playing the cornet in Aurora High School, kept him involved with local bands and up to the day of his death he was playing his beloved tuba. He played for years with the Grand Island Stuhr Museum band. The Hamilton County Community Band has been his joy for many years with performances for the various senior homes, Aurora Days, the Fourth of July celebrations, Memorial Day gatherings and the dances at the Grand Island Veterans Home. His fellow band members will be gathered to perform for his memorial service. Having farmed for years with horses, he loved horses and his many dogs, which he had nearly to the end of his days. During these last years, the friends and neighbors in Grand Island, where he and Marceina retired, have been his greatest joy. The closeness of the Reed family, Kozial family, and Wetzel family with their visits, food and concern will always be remembered and appreciated. The memorial for Kenneth will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 30, at the Phillips Cemetery. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.
