After graduating high school in 1919, Ken went to work on his oldest brother Ralph’s farm, but plummeting grain prices along with Ralph’s entire swine herd being destroyed by hog cholera soon forced Ken to find work elsewhere. Ken next worked for several years at the creamery in West Liberty, and then found a better job delivering fuel for Swart and Brook who operated a Texaco station in West Liberty during the 1930s and 1940s. Ken met his future wife Irene McCullough at a barn dance when she was just sixteen. They eloped and married a few years later on October 19, 1927. Ken and Irene were blessed with two sons, Bob and Don. When Ken’s father-in-law, Will McCullough, retired from farming in 1943, Ken got the chance to get back into farming, now on the old McCullough/Crawford farm located two miles north of Lone Tree. Ken remained a farmer for the rest of his working life, retiring in 1965. Even in retirement Ken remained on the family farm, though he did spend his winters in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ken was a man who was a hard worker and kept his farm neat as a pin, but despite his work ethic, he put people first in his life. He cared deeply—and it showed—for his family and friends, taking delight in visiting them, staying in touch by telephone, and remembering their birthdays. He rarely complained—even when he had a right to—and never spoke ill of others. He was an accomplished card player (bridge, pinochle, euchre, and gin rummy, among other games), and was an avid fisherman who caught fish big and small from Alaska to Mexico, but most of all in his native Iowa and on summer trips to northern Minnesota. Ken was humble, wise, and kind. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. His was a life well lived.
