Description	:	RITES HELD FOR MINER Funeral services were held this afternoon in Winner, for Kenneth O (sic) Miller, 35 who was killed Saturday afternoon at the Homestake Mine. Miller, who had been residing in Sturgis, died instantly from a severe skull fracture. According to Homestake General Manager A. H. Shoemaker there were no witnesses to the accident but it is believed that Miller was looking down a shaft when the cage struck him on the head. Shoemaker stated, "the cager on the 5000 foot level noticed blood on an empty car when he pulled it from the cage. ... Miller, who had been residing in Sturgis, died instantly from a severe skull fracture. According to Homestake General Manager A. H. Shoemaker there were no witnesses to the accident but it is believed that Miller was looking down a shaft when the cage struck him on the head. Shoemaker stated, "the cager on the 5000 foot level noticed blood on an empty car when he pulled it from the cage. He then started investigating by phone and Miller was found on the 4850 station." He also said, "the accident occured at the No. 3 Winze but Miller had no duties at that spot. He was assigned duties several hundred yards from that station." Crews had been caging muck during the afternoon and cars had been hoisted without any cagers accompanying them. Miller, who had been employed by the Homestake since July was formerly from Winner, and his family had recently joined him in his home at Sturgis.
