Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at the First United Methodist Church. The Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is assisting the family. Kenneth Ray Chaplin was born December 22, 1928, in Hollandale, Minnesota, the seventh of Harry and Fern Chaplins eight children. He attended country schools through the eighth grade, at which time he left the classroom to work on the family farm. From January 1951 to January 1953, he served in the United States Army and was sent overseas to Korea. His wartime service instilled within him a great sense of love and pride for his country. In 2015 he carried that pride to Washington, D.C., on an Honor Flight with other area veterans. On April 25, 1953, Kenny was united in marriage to Betty Karekel in Webster City, Iowa. The couple was blessed with four children. Kenny worked at Farmland Foods for many years, then at Iowa Falls Tractor Parts until he retired. After retirement, he assisted on many Monday nights at Adams Bros. Auctions. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and the American Legion for 18 years. He enjoyed farming and attending farm sales and was an avid racing fan. He loved watching as his grandsons graduated from go-karts to stock cars. Kenny is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty; two children, Shelly (Ron) Silvey and Kent (Janis) Chaplin, of Iowa Falls; six grandchildren; Jessica (Brendan) Driscoll, of Austin, Texas, and Sara (Jason) Knott, Angela Silvey (Brent Lennard), Brandon (Janelle) Chaplin, Adam Silvey and Trevor (Taran) Chaplin, of Iowa Falls; 11 great-grandchildren, Kayla Driscoll (Scott Dennis), Kelsi Ackerman, Abbie Chaplin, Chloe Fagerlind, Klohie Ackerman, Kenley Chaplin, River Raske, Kayne Chaplin, Kohlten Knott, Kelanie Chaplin and Ava Driscoll; one great-great-grandson, Braxton Dennis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; father- and mother-in-law, Forrest and Dorothy Karekel; daughters Vicki (in infancy) and Sherri; siblings, Harry, LaVere, Keith, Berle, Vivian, Thelma and Evelyn; and several nieces and nephews.
